Common Name5-Deoxy-D-ribose
Description5-Deoxy-D-ribose belongs to the class of organic compounds known as monosaccharides. Monosaccharides are compounds containing one carbohydrate unit not glycosidically linked to another such unit, and no set of two or more glycosidically linked carbohydrate units. Monosaccharides have the general formula CnH2nOn. Based on a literature review a significant number of articles have been published on 5-Deoxy-D-ribose. This compound has been identified in human blood as reported by (PMID: 31557052 ). 5-deoxy-d-ribose is not a naturally occurring metabolite and is only found in those individuals exposed to this compound or its derivatives. Technically 5-Deoxy-D-ribose is part of the human exposome. The exposome can be defined as the collection of all the exposures of an individual in a lifetime and how those exposures relate to health. An individual's exposure begins before birth and includes insults from environmental and occupational sources.

Enzymes

General function:
Not Available
Specific function:
Catalyzes the irreversible cleavage of the glycosidic bond in both 5'-methylthioadenosine (MTA) and S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH/AdoHcy) to adenine and the corresponding thioribose, 5'-methylthioribose and S-ribosylhomocysteine, respectively. Also cleaves 5'-deoxyadenosine, a toxic by-product of radical S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) enzymes, into 5-deoxyribose and adenine. Thus, is required for in vivo function of the radical SAM enzymes biotin synthase and lipoic acid synthase, that are inhibited by 5'-deoxyadenosine accumulation.

Specific function:
Catalyzes the direct conversion of aminodeoxyfutalosine (AFL) into dehypoxanthine futalosine (DHFL) and adenine via the hydrolysis of the N-glycosidic bond; this reaction seems to represent an essential step in the menaquinone biosynthesis pathway in Helicobacter species. Also catalyzes the hydrolysis of 5'-methylthioadenosine (MTA) to adenine and 5'-methylthioribose. Can also probably use S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH) as substrate, leading to adenine and S-ribosylhomocysteine. These other activities highlight the tremendous versatility of the enzyme, which also plays key roles in S-adenosylmethionine recycling and in the biosynthesis of the quorum-sensing molecule autoinducer-2.
